History & Heritage of Wytheville : Historic Preservation in Wytheville

Historic Preservation in Wytheville - Excerpts from the Town of Wytheville Comprehensive Plan (2006) the full plan is available on the Town website at http://www.wytheville.org/pdf/compreh ... 20plan%20-%20complete.pdf
HISTORIC PRESERVATION Introduction The modern day Town of Wytheville finds its origin in the earliest days of Wythe County as the site of the County courthouse and the center of commerce. In 1790, the Town was established as the Wythe County seat. In 1792, the General Assembly passed an act establishing the new town of Evansham, named for a prominent county citizen, Jesse Evans. Almost fifty years later, on March 6, 1839, the town trustees rechristened Evansham as the Town of Wytheville.
Located at the crossroads of early transportation routes such as Peppers Ferry and Ingles Ferry Trails and the Great Road from Philadelphia, Wytheville was naturally selected as the regional supply center and a stopping point for settlers heading towards the western frontier. An abundance of natural mineral spas and a cool temperate climate characterized the town as a popular summer resort for families seeking refuge from the humid summers of the Deep South. During the years of the Civil War, Wytheville was a target for Northern forces seeking to halt the production of lead at the nearby lead mines and stop the movement of supplies to the Confederate troops. Wythe County was the site of four major battles. The first was the Battle of Wytheville, which occurred on July 17, 1863. Troops led by Colonel John Toland, destroyed most homes and businesses within the town. |

FAQ and Hints on Using this Website and our Features : "Articles, News & Announcements" versus "News & Announcements from the Community"
|

Understanding the difference between our "Articles, News & Announcements" feature and "News & Announcements from the Community." "News & Announcements from the Community" is intended to be an organized community "blog" which enables all registered users to submit and self approve for posting news and announcements on a variety of topics relevant to daily life in our local region. That feature is unmoderated, thus registered users have the flexible ability to post news and announcements relative to the topic. Submissions to that category will be "pruned" after a reasonable period of time. We will, upon request, create a new topic category or subcategory for use by any regional neighborhood or community based organization so that members of that group may readily find and post news of their organization or neighborhood.
The "Articles, News & Announcements" feature is a more moderated news area, where all articles are approved by the website moderator or a vetted contributing writer. We welcome providing serious writers the opportunity to publish articles and stories of the history and heritage of the local region. We also are open to local writers who wish to write regular columns on a variety of topics (we are open to suggestions) relevant to local readers.
